Breed Highlight: Tunis
Fat bottom sheep, you make the rockin' world go 'round!
Tunis sheep are descended from the fat tailed sheep of North Africa, gifted to George Washington in the 1700’s by the Bey (chieftain) of Tunis. They have been crossbred on this continent to create a distinctly American, broad-tailed sheep breed. They have beautiful red faces and pleasingly pendulous ears. They have been primarily bred for meat production and calm temperaments. However, their medium-length pearl wool is lovely to work with as well. They are great mothers, with heavy milk production even on poor pasture, which has led to a resurgence of interest in this endangered breed as more producers find themselves weathering suboptimal grass growing conditions.
